Attraction: Black Hair Affairs

June 22, 2010

froYesterday, the homie YH posted a link to the facebook fanpage about the pros and cons of straight and natural hair.  I think it was like Natural v. Relaxed Hair, or something like that.  Anyhow, I read it on my blackberry because I was out and about.  At one point, i thought, since i wasn’t at home reading it from my desktop, perhaps there was a glitch in the post that could be attributable to my bb.  There appeared, in my opinion at least, to be  a glaring omission on the “cons of natural hair” list–you don’t get dates.  Ok, i’m not going to say that you never get dates (i still do obviously) but it’s certainly much harder (believe me).

The timing of the article proved to be  perfect since right now, i’m working on a new post  entitled Attraction: Attraction, Aversion & Advertisement.” I know.  Another attraction post?  Well, as i’ve said before, the reason i spend so much time on the issue of attraction is because (1) if you’re single (and it’s not by choice), it’s most likely the number one reason why you’re not dating, and (2) it would make absolutely no sense for me to overwhelm you with “relationship” posts on tools on how to be a good or better partner in your relationship if guys aren’t even asking you out.

In case you don’t already know this, initially, attraction is the single most important factor when it comes to dating and I would give you a brief synopsis of the post now but this is the internet and thievin’ bitches be lurking.  So be patient, Danielsan, it’s coming.

Anyhow, in another divine intervention, i suppose,  i somehow found my way to some lovely sister’s blog and came upon the hair issue again.  This time, black women’s hair (natural v. relaxed) as it relates to black men and their beauty ideal.  She posted two videos there that i’ve reposted below and sincerely hope you’ll watch.  Let me warn you that all of the dudes here are young and some of the dudes are not very articulate but, bear with it, it’s not too hard to decipher what they mean.  Also, they might be young and inarticulate but their beliefs aren’t too far off from most of the brothers you’ll meet out there in the dating arena.  For black men, this issue of black women’s hair cuts the same regardless of age, class, level of education, geographical region, and etc.  Also, white men have certain hair preferences for white women too, although it’s completely different and it doesn’t figure into their dating decisions as prominently it does ours.

In the meantime, watch it, leave your thoughts if you have any, and pass it along.

ciao
